Skincare and myths: here are 5 things you should stop believing

We hear a lot of rumours and false myths about skincare that have been passed down from our grandmothers and aunts until, in the age of the internet, they become real fake news. Thanks to the infinite availability of sources and expert opinions on the web, we can finally explain why these are false myths that you absolutely must not listen to if you want healthy skin. Here are the 5 false myths you no longer need to believe and why:
Exfoliating Acids Do Not Thin the Skin
Chemical exfoliation can be intimidating, and many misconceptions surround this process, which, when performed with the utmost care as required by any treatment, can significantly improve the condition of our skin. Exfoliating acids such as BHA and AHA work within the different layers of the epidermis, penetrating to varying depths, thereby stimulating cell turnover. This is not a superficial exfoliation and does not lead to a reduction in the stratum corneum.

Oily Skin Requires Hydration
We are well aware of the characteristics of oily skin, and the excessive production of sebum across the face often leads individuals with this skin type to avoid using a good facial moisturizer. This couldn't be further from the truth! All skin types require hydration. By neglecting moisturization, oily skin can become dehydrated, triggering even more sebum production as a defensive response to already irregular skin due to hormonal factors. Oily skin should use a lightweight moisturizer, possibly in a gel form, without nourishing ingredients such as oils and butters, and with sebum-regulating properties.
Makeup Alone Doesn't Ruin Skin or Cause Pimples
In the case of skin conditions like acne, there has always been a belief that using makeup too often could exacerbate the situation. However, it's not the makeup itself, if chosen to suit your skin type and accompanied by a proper skincare routine, that leads to more imperfections. Instead, it's inadequate cleansing, neglecting cosmetic product expiration dates, and poor hygiene of brushes and makeup tools where bacteria can proliferate and cause pimples and blemishes.

Toothpaste or Baking Soda and Lemon Do Not Cure Pimples
We've all experienced the frustration of a pimple appearing on our forehead or chin just before an important event. However, the solution doesn't lie in DIY methods such as using toothpaste or a mixture of baking soda and lemon. These methods can actually irritate the skin further, leading to temporary disappearance of the imperfection but accompanied by redness and excessive dryness. A proper skincare routine with products containing ingredients like salicylic acid, along with the correct use of purifying masks, can help combat last-minute imperfections.
